About The Artist

Sinclair has been practicing out of his home studio for the past 4 years, and has been honing his skills and knowledge of reduction fired ceramics. His work is a reflection of the varying landscapes and dynamics involved in the arduous process of wood firing. Typically, 8-12 people will spend weeks preparing for a firing, before continuously tending to the kiln. Over the course of 3-4 days they will rely on their senses when overseeing the kiln, as the temperature gradually builds - responding to the glow of the pots; pyrometrics, weather, ash build-up and smoke at different times throughout the firing.

In late 2024 Sinclair designed and built a custom Onggi wheel, with the intention of being more present when making and consciously slowing his practice down. Making tools from scratch and having his hands involved in every step of the process has been a very rewarding experience that significantly improved the quality of his work. In May 2025, Sinclair completed a 3 week residency at Driving Creek in the Coromandel, New Zealand. He regards this as a rare opportunity to wholly devote himself to exploration. Completely self directed, he sourced and processed wild clay, used local ingredients to make glazes from scratch and led a 14-hour wood/soda firing. Learning from - and connecting with the community that selflessly upholds Driving Creek has given clarity and direction to Sinclair’s own practice.
